MAJOR coastal defence schemes at Aberystwyth and Aberaeron are to be put forward for Welsh Government funding.
Other schemes for Borth and Llangrannog are also being drawn up.
Early reports into plans for Aberystwyth and Aberaeron have been completed which would see a new overtopping defence wall to the rear of Aberystwyth promenade.
Attempts would also be made to increase sea defences and major works at Aberaeron to replace the South Pier, reprofiling and new groins at South Beach and work on the inner harbour wall.
Options for schemes at Borth, which would cover the coastline area from the golf club to Ynyslas, and Llangrannog are also being considered.
The Welsh Government has shown support for the proposals for Aberystwyth and Aberaeron and has asked the council to put forward funding bids for more detailed plans.
Paul Arnold, of the council’s technical services department, said: “Project appraisal reports have been produced for Aberystwyth and Aberaeron. Borth and Llangrannog are still at the feasibility stage.
“Aberystwyth will benefit from a proposal to create an overtopping defence wall arrangement to the rear of the promenade and increase the defence capability of the existing sea wall where deemed appropriate.
“Aberaeron will require extensive works which will see the replacement of the South Pier, a major reprofiling and groining of South Beach and wall grouting/tanking to the entire inner harbour wall."
