A Llyn man has celebrated his 50th birthday by raising money for a local boathouse.

When Damien Thompson, of Abersoch, heard that Pwllheli RNLI station were raising funds to build a new boathouse for a new lifeboat, he felt as though he needed to help.

A member of St Tudwal’s Lodge at Pwllheli, he embarked on a bike ride from Pwllheli to Llanberis a day before his 50th birthday.

He then walked up and down 3,560-foot Snowdon before cycling back to the RNLI boathouse at Pwllheli.

And to make a tough challenge even harder he completed the 64-mile journey wearing a RNLI Musto suit.

It took Damien a total of 13 hours to complete the gruelling event, starting off at 6.30am and finishing completely worn out at 7.30pm where he was warmly welcomed by lifeboat crew members, his family and friends.

After Damien had sorted out his sponsorship forms he discovered to his delight that he had collected a tremendous sum of £530.

He was then given a cheque for £570 by the North Wales Masonic Benevolent Association, making a grand total of £1,100 for the boathouse appeal.
