AN Aberystwyth couple who have spent 60 years living at the same flat celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary last week.
Bill and Ena Gough, of Heol Nanteos, Penparcau, marked three-quarters of a century together as husband and wife on Tuesday, 4 October.
Ena, who is 98, and Bill, 96, married in Bognor Regis on 3 October, 1941, but within just a few days, Bill was sent to Burma with the 1st British Survey Royal Artillery, where he served until the end of the Second World War.
Upon Bill’s safe return to the UK, the couple moved to Doncaster, where Bill worked as a miner until the early 1950s, when the couple moved to Llanon with their twin sons, Michael and John.
After a short while, Bill and Ena moved to Penparcau, where they still live independently in the same flat they moved into all those years ago.
Before retirement, Bill found work as a storekeeper at Manweb, while Ena worked as a catering assistant at Pantycelyn.
“When dad first came back, he worked in the pits and then got a job with Manweb when he moved to Aberystwyth,” Bill’s son Michael, 69, told the Cambrian News this week.
“Mum worked in Pantycelyn, where she used to serve Prince Charles food while he was doing his investiture at the university.”
