Madam,

Lucy Huws in her letter of 5 May, ‘Decision to build a new church on ruin of Welsh Martyrs is a shock’, expresses eloquently the anger and frustration of Aberystwyth Catholics with the poor treatment received from a Swansea-based Bishop who has made no formal visit to Aberystwyth since 2014 and who communicates by means of edicts.

Despite promising Aberystwyth Catholics they would be consulted, Bishop Burns has decided without consultation to borrow money to build another church on the site of the derelict Catholic Church in Penparcau. To what purpose? A replacement church in this location would still be woefully inadequate for the needs of Aberystwyth and visiting Catholics. Why not refurbish Aberystwyth’s Catholic Church of St Winefride’s in Queens Road which has remained closed for the last four years on the Bishop’s orders, whilst property deals were pursued in Penparcau which appear to have come to nothing. Bishop Tom Burns needs to come to Aberystwyth a lot more and consult properly with his flock.

Yours etc

David C Subacchi
