Sports

BLAENAU Amateurs FC were to play two home matches over Easter, the first being a 4-2 defeat by Meliden on Saturday with David Copsey scoring their two goals, but the other, against Penmaenmawr Pheonix on Easter Monday, was postponed due to a waterlogged Cae Clyd pitch. They have another home match on Saturday as they take on bottom club Gaerwen. The Reserves were beaten 5-3 Llandyrnog on Saturday and they were at Llangefni on Wednesday evening this week. Bro Ffestiniog XV are through to a WRU Plate final after beating Denbigh 31-0 at Dolawel on Saturday. They will play Llandudno in the final at Colwyn Bay on a date to be confirmed. Heritage status bidCLLR Erwyn Jones attended a meeting of the UnLlais Cymru in Dolgellau where Bethan Jones Parry discussed the application for an UNESCO World Heritage Site Gwynedd Slate Area. Gwynedd Council is leading on this, but there are several others who are part of the partnership —namely University of Wales, Bangor, the National Trust and the Snowdonia National Park Authority. It is felt that the local economy would not develop very much without this status and it is hoped to create up to 5,000 high-quality jobs in the region in light of the status. It was pointed out that the intention of the designation is not to hinder development.

Grass fires

LAST year, a total of 25 deliberate grass fires were reported in the area which, according to the police, will count towards the district’s crime figures. With this in mind, the police, in co-operation with the fire service, held an event called Dawns y Glaw on two days of last week at Ysgol y Moelwyn, where films were shown and there was an opportunity to talk about the impact the fires have on the community and the wildlife. It has also been announced that there will be more police and fire officers on patrol in the area until the risk of grass fires has passed.

Post Office

THE LATEST information regarding local post office facilities is that it has not been definitely decided to move it from the present High Street to the Eurospar supermarket at The Square. They will need to prepare their business plan and also consult with the public before any decision is made. Now it seems that another two local businesses are also interested in running the service. Information has also been given that no decision has been made to relocate the local postal sorting office and that no decision will be taken on this issue for a year or two.

Council service cuts

IT HAS been confirmed that Gwynedd Council will not provide salt bins after 1 October and that they are also looking to reduce the public toilets service here as well. With that in mind, the town council has already taken steps to provide the salt bin service, which has been well received locally as they are so important in helping to clear the town’s side streets etc when ice and snow is making travelling and walking dangerous. The town council is also in discussion with Gwynedd Council about taking responsibility for the public toilets.
