A BLAENAU Ffestiniog woman will feature on a television show which sees her welcoming her eighth child.
Emma Edwards, 31, originally from Penrhyndeudraeth, will share her journey from bump to birth on S4C’s Babi Del, a series which follows families as they experience the highs and lows of pregnancy and welcoming a baby into the world, on Tuesday, 10 November.
Emma’s children consist of five boys and three girls ranging from aged 12 to eight weeks, but Emma insists that Enya Gwen is her last offspring.
She said: “She’s definitely the last, we won’t have anymore! We didn’t plan on having as many children. But we both come from large families, I’m one of six, and Chris, my husband, is one of four!”
Emma moved to Blaenau Ffestiniog when she was four years old and her husband, Chris, 36, is a bus driver originally from the West Midlands; he first moved to Blaenau when he was 12. Both met each other out locally.
Emma added: “My friend agreed to do Babi Del, but her baby was born before filming started. After that, I decided ‘why not’. I thought we had an interesting story, being a large family.”
The mother of eight had quite a shock with the timing of the baby’s delivery; Enya was delivered after a 20-minute labour in Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.
She said: “Having the cameras following me wasn’t that bad, I thought it would be worse, but I forgot about it.”
She said that being a mother of eight has encouraged various responses from family and friends.
“People think that we’re mad! It’s actually been quite hard, because our family live quite far away, and no one is around to help.”
Both her eldest two children are in secondary school Ysgol Y Moelwyn in Blaenau Ffestiniog and Emma says all of the children are hands-on with their latest sibling.
“They do help me a lot! But at times they carry on like she isn’t here, and are quite noisy; but on the whole they’re very good with Enya.”
