THE AXE poised over Llandysul Library has yet to fall after Ceredigion county councillors read the riot act to officers over what they claimed was a lack of information on the proposed closure and the county’s library service in general.

Following a highly-charged debate on Friday morning, members of the scrutiny committee deferred a recommendation to Tuesday’s meeting of Cabinet pending a full breakdown of the running costs of all five Ceredigion libraries.

And as campaigners fighting the closure watched intently from the public gallery, councillors delivered a blistering riposte to the report by head of ICT and customer services Arwyn Morris.

“You really are taking the mickey out of the committee by bringing this before us,” Cllr Rowland Rees-Evans told him.

“Almost 500 people have voiced objections against the fact we’re ripping the heart out of a main service centre - and that’s a lot of people.

“I would suggest that you go away and come back with another report and one which shows us the costs of running each library in the county.”
