The recent flooding in North Parade, Aberystwyth was undoubtedly made worse by the failure of Ceredigion council to adequately maintain the road gullies. This low-lying part of town was subject to frequent flooding prior to the installation of a new drainage system in the late 1970s, which was designed to cope with thunderstorms etc. Now, due to blocked gullies this rainwater cannot reach the sewers properly and backs up on the surface. Blockages on higher ground e.g Market Street and Great Darkgate Street add to the problem by increasing surface run-off, which puts more load on the system lower down.
This is just another example of how the local authority again fails to meet its obligations to taxpayers, such as the removal of disabled parking bays in favour of al fresco dining.
This council is now unfit for its purpose.
To consider that our rubbishstrewn streets are a reasonable price to pay for “world-leading recycling rates” is clearly delusional.
