A Canadian blogger who made her home in Tywyn five years ago, has spoken to the Cambrian News about her love of Wales and her “amazing” journey with the Welsh language.
Heather Broster, 35, moved to Tywyn in 2015 with her French-Italian husband, Mathieu Gasquet.
The couple work as professional bloggers, writing digital camera reviews from home on their website – Mirrorless Comparison. Mathieu also has a part-time job at the Magic Lantern Cinema.
Six months ago Heather set up a blog called We Learn Welsh to share her journey with the Welsh language and encourage others to join her in learning.
Heather told the Cambrian News: “I felt that writing about Welsh would help me improve my knowledge and share my love for the language with the world.
“Since we already understand the world of blogging, it wasn’t difficult to build or launch.
“I tend to write about words, grammar points and expressions I find interesting, as well as my personal experiences in Wales.”
Having spent two years studying in Japan and seven years teaching in Italy before settling in Tywyn, Heather is used to learning a variety of languages.
But when asked if she considers herself linguistically talented, Heather said she does not.
“I wouldn’t call myself talented – just extremely persistent! It takes a lot of work to learn another language to proficiency.
“For example, I usually spend around an hour a day studying vocabulary and grammar, reading, and watching television with Welsh subtitles, and that’s nothing compared to the true polyglots out there!
“It doesn’t come easily but that’s part of the challenge and the joy of language learning.”
