A movie made in Llanidloes has screened for the first time in the town.

Dead Good Beer, certificate 15, had its premiere in Pwdin at the Whispering Badger on Wednesday night.

The 52-minute film has been produced on a zero budget by Llanidloes filmmaker Matthew Davies.

The comedy-horror film – “with not much horror”, Matthew is keen to point out – follows a brother and sister as they struggle to find a cure for some dodgy beer that’s been made from GM crops.

“You know you’ve got a bad brew when the beer turns you into a zombie,” said Matthew.

Filmed in and around Llanidloes, including the Angel Inn and the Old Mill, the film has a local cast and crew.

Some of it was also filmed in Monty’s Brewery in Montgomery.

“We’re proud that we managed to write, film and edit this community film on a zero budget,” Matthew said.

“It’s given a lot of people the chance to be involved in a feature film.

Dead Good Beer isn’t a Hollywood blockbuster. It’s a Montgomeryshire film and it’s been made with blood, sweat and beers!”

Explaining more about his career, Matthew said: “I’ve made a few short films in the past, such as A Day in the Life of Eric the Teabag, but this is my first comedy-horror.

“It all began when I said to a friend, David Lee, ‘Why don’t we make a movie? I’ve got a camera and lights... all we need is a script, a storyline, some actors, some venues, plenty of good weather and everyone to give their time free of charge! And to supply their own clothes, transport and food’.

“We thought up some mad ideas. He went off and wrote it and then we auditioned for actors. We set it in Llanidloes so we could show the town off – and also so we didn’t have to travel very far!”
