THE mayoress of New Quay claims primary school children are having to run the gauntlet of traffic due to the “selfishness” of the town’s bowling club.

Angry Kirsty Jones claimed a parking problem did not exist outside the town’s primary in Francis Street until New Quay Bowls Club placed metal pillars on land previously used by parents dropping off and collecting their children.

But the bowls club has hit back – maintaining that the car park on their land has been “systematically misused and abused” by school staff and parents over the years.

Ms Jones spoke out after taking photos of what she described as the “chaos” outside the school on one morning of last week.

“The county council leased the only parking area available to the school to the bowling club,” she said. “They have also allowed them to chain it off.

“It’s so dangerous because only one car can pass through there at a time. I feel it is only a matter of time before we have an accident."

But New Quay Bowling Club secretary Richard Iwanek said parking problems had been “a thorn in the club’s flesh” for many years.

“That car park which is part of the club’s land that we lease from Ceredigion County Council has been misused and abused over the years,” he told the Cambrian News.

“The problem is that the school has a sense of entitlement which is totally false – they are beefing about a car park which is ours to use as we see fit.

“This year we decided that enough was enough and agreed to chain it off.”
