Madam,

I am writing in response to Quentin Deakin’s letter (29 August) in which he says it is a “gross exaggeration” for me to say Tywyn is ‘plagued’ by a gang of boy racers.

Would he have preferred I’d used the words troubled, bothered, bedevilled or afflicted to describe the constant nuisance and noise suffered by the people of the town?

He concedes that it is ‘irresponsible and anti-social behaviour which needs to be followed up firmly when reported’. Dozens of people have reported it by phoning 101 to complain, yet nothing is ever done about it.

The use of motor vehicles in this way is a form of intimidation. Loud noises from engines or exhausts can also be seen as an aggressive act, something which the perpetrators seem to delight in.

The point of my letter was to remind the Police aand Crime Commissioner that his role is to cut crime and deliver an effective police service within his force area. He is, after all, supposed to be accountable to the public yet seems to be more focused on providing drug users with a safe place to shoot up than keeping the peace or maintaining law and order.

For Mr Deakin’s information my family have lived in the Tywyn area for generations and I am immensely proud of the town and the people who live there.

Yours etc, Louise Hughes, county councillor, Llangelynnin Ward, Llanegryn.
