An afternoon tea in Harlech has raised over £800 for breast cancer awareness charities.
Bethan Jones, who lives in Harlech, decided to host an afternoon tea and raffle at her home on Wednesday, 17 July, to raise both money for and awareness of breast cancer, allowing people to donate to the cause as well as share their experiences.
Influenced by her own experience of breast cancer, as well as that of family members, raising awareness is close to her heart.
Bethan explained that she has a notable family history of breast cancer, with both her mother and grandmother having battled it.
She was treated herself 11 years ago, and described the discovery of a dent, rather than a lump, which led her to seek medical help.
It was then that Bethan discovered she had breast cancer and had to undergo two operations and months of chemotherapy to overcome it.
She said: “I wanted to make people aware that it’s not just lumps to look out for. Going to a GP saved my life and has allowed me to survive another 11 years.”
She saw hosting an afternoon tea as an important opportunity to raise awareness.
The afternoon was attended by 37 people, including “several ladies who are survivors themselves”.
A total of £823 has been raised so far.
Bethan said: “I’m hoping to hit around £850, but we didn’t even expect to get to this amount; everyone has been very generous.”
She thanked all those who attended and everyone who helped on the day to make the afternoon tea a success.
