Madam,

I have been reading the letters page and the comments from Robert Morris on the situation in regards to the beggars and drunks in the main streets of Aberystwyth (Concerned about growing number of beggars).

This is a very much talked about topic wherever you go now in the town. Recently I was sitting in the square with a friend when an empty wine bottle was rolled across the main road from the Barclays bank area. Luckily a lady saw this and quickly picked up the bottle and disposed of it in one of the litter bins nearby.

The two men sitting on the floor directly outside the bank were not a bit concerned with the possibility of an accident happening. This was early in the afternoon with lots of pedestrians and motorists about.

I’m very sorry to have to say this but it is very rare now to see police officers on the beat in the town. Perhaps this adds to the fact that these drunk people are getting away with what they like.

The CCTV system in the town is non-existent, also. If this was back in operation I certainly believe that the police would have to respond to the camera operator’s call.

Yours etc,

Bill Stretch, Aberystwyth.
