Country fair
KEN Ellis, director of Y Ganolfan Bryncrug Community Centre Ltd, recently suggested to the members they might like to resurrect the annual country fair, once a regular item on the village’s calendar.With the full agreement of all members, Ken organised a small sub- committee to make this event possible on Bank Holiday Monday, 29 August. The weather was kind on the day and many villagers and visitors attended the event which included competitions for cookery, handicrafts, vegetables and fruit, sheep racing, sheep shearing demonstrations and worm charming. The judges were impressed with the high standard of the entries.There were some farm animals for everyone to see at close quarters from Ken’s own farm and other animals too.There was a bar and barbecue, kindly run by staff from the nearby Peniarth Arms and a raffle with the major prize being donated by Huws Gray Ltd.Dysynni Community First Responders were on site to demonstrate a defibrillator and make people aware of simple ways to deal with other common emergencies.Children’s amusements were provided by Smith’s Entertainments and a model passenger carrying steam railway supervised by Ian Dods.Tea, coffee and cakes were provided by volunteers in Y Ganolfan itself and there were a couple of craft stalls and an art exhibition consisting of pictures by local artist Tom James.Laura Ryan opened the Meithrinfa Deryn Bach, which is located in the same building, so that visitors could see the facilities available.
