Welsh jazz/folk band Burum are on a tour of Wales and will play at Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum in Aberystwyth on Friday.

Burum’s repertoire is drawn from Welsh traditional music, adapted and re-imagined for a modern jazz sextet. The band’s music fuses a deep respect for the original folk melodies themselves with the flexibility and dynamics of jazz improvisation - beautiful, melancholic melodies are performed alongside fiery solos and deep grooves.

Led by Aberystwyth born and bred brothers Tomos Williams on trumpet and Daniel Williams on tenor sax, Burum also includes young folk virtuoso Patrick Rimes (well known for his work with folk bands Calan and Vri) on pipes and flute, which immediately places the band’s music in a different world to the usual jazz quintet/sextet.

Burum have strong links with Aberystwyth, since the Williams brothers are from the town and attended Penweddig in the 1980s and 1990s and were a part of the county’s strong musical provision at the time.

Tomos recently debuted his new work ‘Cwmwl Tystion/Witness’ at the Great Hall in Aberystwyth Arts Centre, and performed at a packed Ceredigion Museum with his Miles Davis tribute band 7Steps back in November 2018. Tomos, who has also recently been presenting a jazz programme on Fridays on Radio Cymru introducing jazz a new audience, is delighted to be back in Aberystwyth and playing at such a wonderful and unique venue as Amgueddfa Ceredigion.

Burum have been playing together for over 10 years and the empathy and friendships that have developed over this time shines through in the music.

Burum are a band, with a distinctive band sound - not a collection of individuals simply playing together.

Burum are: Tomos Williams, trumpet; Daniel Williams, tenor sax; Patrick Rimes, pipes and flutes; Dave Jones, piano; Aidan Thorne, bass; and Mark O’Connor, drums.

See Burum at Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum, Aberystwyth, on Friday, 20 September, at 7pm.
