AN award-winning Llanidloes brewery has closed its doors in a move described as a “blow” to the town.

Waen Brewery, started up by Sue Hayward and husband John Martin in 2009, has been based at the Maesyllan Industrial Estate for several years.

Sue said there were many reasons for the closure, including outside commitments, dedication to quality and competing with low-cost brews, and said it was a “difficult decision”.

“It is with regret, but also enthusiasm, I have to announce that I will cease brewing at our lovely brewery in Llanidloes,” she posted on the brewery’s social media sites.

“I cannot keep running the brewery on a day-to-day basis and actively participating in the broader community, an activity I’m enjoying more and more.”

On Twitter, Sue posted a picture on 25 September of her switching off the brewery for good.

“Power OFF. Good bye brewery,” she posted.

Llanidloes county councillor Gareth Morgan said the closure was a sad day for the town.

“I believe they have a very good product and they supply one of the main local restaurants.

“I am very sad, it is a blow for Llanidloes."
