LLOYDS Coaches, one of Machynlleth’s largest employers, could leave the town if the company is unable to expand, it has been warned.
Company officials warned Machynlleth town councillors that, while the company wants to continue to be based in Machynlleth, it is becoming increasingly difficult because of the limitations of the current depot site.
Also, following the collapse of a Powys County Council plan for a dedicated bus station that would have increased the depot size, the company said it was finding it difficult to identify a suitably-located expanded site in the town.
That has prompted town councillors to pledge their support to the company and vow to call a meeting between politicians, transport companies and officials to find a solution.
Cllr Monica Atkins warned the town could not afford to lose Lloyds Coaches, considering the number of people the company employs and the role it plays in the town’s economy.
She said: “Lloyds Coaches is probably the biggest independent employer in the town. The town would lose greatly if Wyn felt he had to move his business if he couldn’t find a site for his depot. I want the town council to support a motion to keep this independent employer in the town to support the town’s economy.”
