A PROTEST against the relocation of Aberystwyth Post Office to a town centre shop was held at the weekend ahead of a public meeting this Friday.

Organisers of the cross-party Save Aberystwyth Post Office campaign, which aims to stop the closure of the town’s Crown Post Office on Great Darkgate Street, said they held an “extremely successful” protest outside WH Smith in Terrace Road on Saturday.

The protest comes ahead of a public consultation and meeting this Friday, 26 August, at which a Post Office representative will face questions from the public over its plans, which the Post Office wants in place by November despite a 3,000-signature petition against the move.

“The Post Office has said that the franchising is necessary to keep the Crown Offices going and to prevent the taxpayer having to subsidise the service, but it is all just an excuse to put the network into private hands,” a Ceredigion Labour Party spokesperson said.

“The protest was extremely successful. The public were overwhelmingly in support, with many commenting on how shocking it was that WH Smith would be taking their Post Office."
