A MACHYNLLETH chippy has been crowned the best fish and chip shop in Wales.
Hennighan’s Top Shop, on Heol Maengwyn, has won the Wales regional category of the 2017 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.
The Hennighan family will now compete against nine other fish and chip shops from across the UK at the grand finale in London on 26 January as they compete for the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award, with the aim of being named ‘the best fish and chip shop in the UK’.
Eleanor Hennighan, co-owner of Hennighan’s Top Shop, said: “We’ve made it to the top 10 twice before, so to be here for a third time is unbelievable — to win would feel like winning the lottery.
“We’re a small, family-run business that’s been around for 34 years so we’re well-known within the community.
“We pride ourselves in getting to know our customers, offering them the best quality produce and price. We even know most of their names and their usual orders.
“Now that we’re Wales’ best fish and chip shop, we’re definitely going to celebrate with a big night out with all the staff and the locals.”
