QUESTION marks hang over the future of a popular Cardigan store after signs announcing a closing-down sale went up this week.

Staff at QS, the discount clothing and homeware retail store in Canolfan Teifi, say they have been “left in the dark” after their parent company – Store Twenty One – announced plans to “re-structure” the business.

The uncertainty over the future of QS will increase fears that its closure will create a “vacuum” in the heart of town as Cardigan Library, currently based at Canolfan Teifi, is due to move into smaller premises at Morgan Street.

A statement by the store reads: “After very careful consideration, the Store Twenty One directors feel that the decision to enter Store Twenty One into a CVA represents the best option in terms of preserving jobs for our amazing staff, keeping as many shops open as possible, and maintaining great value and service for our thousands of loyal customers.”

Town mayor Cllr Clive Davies, who discussed the situation with store staff on Saturday, said there had been no official announcement that jobs were at threat.

“But to be honest the signs are not looking good,” he added. “If the store does indeed close down, quite a few people in the Cardigan area will miss it."
