THE vice-chair of Gwynedd Council has hit out at plans to relocate Blaenau Ffestiniog’s post office.

Annwen Daniels, who worked in the local postal service for 20 years before taking up politics, expressed her worries for more vulnerable residents who could struggle to reach the new post office if it moves to Eurospar.

The Post Office recently opened a public consultation after proposing to move the town’s post office from its current location to create a “modern main-style branch with extended opening hours” in the Eurospar.

The Post Office is now inviting customers and interested parties to give their comments on the controversial move.

As part of Post Office plans to modernise the network and extend the service hours for customers, the new post office would have three serving positions, a mixture of one modern screened, one open plan and a Post Office service point located at the retail counter.

The branch itself will open from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday, with selected Post Office products and services available from the retail counter during the shop’s opening hours of 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

The opening hours, which will more than double, will increase by an extra 50 hours a week offering more choice of times to visit.

The Cambrian News also understands that the local Co-operative store would be willing to host the Post Office facilities.

Should the move go ahead, it is expected the changeover would take place before spring next year.
