Machynlleth Town Council is “working hard” to ensure the town has enough cash points for residents and visitors, a councillor has insisted.

Concerns have been raised over how people living and visiting Machynlleth can access cash after the closure of the town’s last bank.

Cllr Monica Atkins said she had been approached by numerous residents demanding to know what was happening to improve the situation, and said that people needed to know that the council was working with businesses to try and address the issues.

Town council clerk Jim Griffiths said that, while the council was trying to work with businesses and put pressure on to ensure cashpoints are available in the town, it is not the town council’s responsibility to provide cashpoints.

He said that while a cashpoint is expected to be installed at a local shop, that was not something that could be progressed by the town council.

Cllr Simon Morpeth said Barclays was working to install that cash machine after the town council had urged the bank to continue providing a service, and forced the bank to reconsider cashpoint usage figures, after questioning that there was little demand for the service, especially after the closure of the NatWest bank in the town.

He added that it was important that the town council also urged banks to provide mobile cashpoints in the town during large events such as the Machynlleth Comedy Festival.
