A BATTLE between the owner of an Aberystwyth seafront diner and his landlord, Ceredigion council, may end up in court.

David Day, of PD’s Diner, is in dispute with the council over negotiations regarding a new lease for the café on North Promenade.

A court date has been scheduled for November unless the two parties can strike a deal before that hearing.

It is believed that the council is asking for an increase in rent of around 40 per cent.

Mr Day said he could not agree to the council’s demands and questioned if other tenants of the authority were being asked to pay substantial increases in rent to help the council cope with funding cuts from the Welsh Government.

He said: “No tenant would accept the changes they’ve put forward. I do wonder if other council tenants are facing large rent increases to try and make more money for the council.”

Mr Day said he questioned whether the council was determined to increase his rent substantially to help make up for additional money spent by the authority on the town’s new bandstand after the Cambrian News revealed that costs had spiralled.
