Lampeter Town Football Club is renting out the social club of its old headquarters because it appears footballers just do not let their hair down any more.

Football’s hell-raising days of the 1970s now seem further away than ever after the club managers revealed they are offering their town centre bar lounge in Drovers Road up for rent.

The club blame the demise of the time-honoured tradition of enjoying a few pints post-match.

“We did everything we could to keep the clubhouse going, but nothing seemed to work,” club secretary Dylan Davies told the Cambrian News.

“We’ve decided to put the social club up for rent because of the lack of numbers using the facility.

“There were other reasons as well. We found that away teams just weren’t going back to the clubhouse like they used to, for instance.

“It seems that people just don’t like going out for a drink as they did in the old days, maybe because of the cost, so in the end we felt we just couldn’t justify keeping the social club open.

“Our players go back to the Royal Oak for their sandwiches after a game now.

“Our playing numbers are still holding up, though. We put out two senior teams and reserves and our junior section is really thriving.”

The former headquarters of one of Ceredigion’s oldest clubs, where generations of Lampeter footballers have socialised since the 1920s, can be rented out at a weekly cost of £150.
