THE future of the air range at Aberporth has been secured until at least 2028 after QinetiQ – who manage the range on behalf of the Ministry of Defence - announced a £95m investment programme.

QinetiQ say the securing of a £1bn contract amendment to the Long Term Partnering Agreement from the MOD will enable them to deliver modern air ranges and test aircrew to strengthen future military capability.

Under the LTPA, test and evaluation services have been delivered at MOD Aberporth since 2003 – that contract has now been extended to 25 years.

A major employer locally since the 1950s, the base currently employs 209 people – and QinetiQ have not ruled out the possibility of employing more staff in the future.

“Our intention is that we’re going to grow the business,” Graeme Morrison, operational director for maritime, land and weapons, told the Cambrian News.

“Like any other business we hope to see returns on our investment.

“This is a major refresh and confirmation that MOD Aberporth remains hugely important.”
