Climate change protesters at Lampeter’s Harford Square are having a detrimental effect on local trade, it is being claimed.

Recent months have seen the square and its fountain become a focal point for weekly demonstrations.

But Cllr Chris Thomas told colleagues there had been several complaints from local traders.

“I don’t want to stop this sort of thing, but traders in Lampeter are saying that their businesses are being affected,” he added.

“Some are already struggling and the last thing they need is a further drop in trade which could put them out of business as a result of all this nonsense.”

Cllr Ann Morgan said she understood such protests were to be held every Friday.

Town mayor Cllr Rob Phillips said people participating in such days of action would be asked to refrain from daubing chalk slogans on the pavements and the fountain itself.

“I think it’s great that Harford Square is being used as a focal point, but we have to keep it clean and tidy,” he added.

The council, which is planning to take over responsibility for the fountain, agreed to press Ceredigion County Council to re-connect the feature’s water supply.

“We will not be taking over the fountain until it’s been restored to sound working order,” said Cllr Phillips.
