A FLEDGLING business has lambasted Gwynedd Council for “ruining one of the most important weeks of the year”.
In recent weeks, traffic in Tywyn has been disrupted as essential roadworks took place throughout the town.
Retailers, although handicapped by the resurfacing work, understood that they were a “necessary evil” and were waiting for Friday, 17 February for the job to be finished, in time to prepare for half term and a crowd of holidaymakers.
However, Francesca Pridding, owner of A Likely Story book store on Tywyn’s High Street, was dismayed to find out that the project deadline had been postponed with work continuing throughout half term, “devastating” local trade as a consequence.
“It’s been just awful for the last three weeks, I’ve not been able to put out signs and no one is sure if we’re open or not, we’ve seen an atrocious downturn in trade,” she told the Cambrian News before half term.
“We need to make it as simple as possible for people to get into our businesses,” she said.
A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “Resurfacing work was required on the High Street in Tywyn.
“However, as Dwr Cymru was also carrying out work in the area, the council coordinated the works so that all work on the highway was completed together before the main tourist season."
