BUSINESS savvy primary school learners and some of Wales’ most successful entrepreneurs have joined forces at Llechwedd Slate Mine in order to kick-start a national competition promoting enterprise in school children.
Enterprise Troopers, the annual competition run by Big Ideas Wales, brings together five to 11-year-olds from across the country. Pupils form teams to run their own enterprises, selling merchandise and services of their choosing in their schools and local communities.
The Enterprise Troopers competition is an initiative led by the Welsh Government in line with the new school curriculum, which places an emphasis on encouraging entrepreneurial qualities in young people and equipping them with the life skills they will need to enter the world of work. The competition aims to cultivate enterprising, creative individuals, who will ultimately have an advantage when they eventually enter the workplace.
At the event in Llechwedd Slate Mine, 125 local primary school learners from years three to six mingled with established Welsh entrepreneurs, competition sponsors and organisers to discuss the enterprises they have established within their schools and local communities. Other primary schools from the region are being encouraged to put forward their own enterprising endeavours for this year’s competition.
