PEOPLE in Nefyn have been urged to help buy their own pub.

Last Saturday a fundraising and Welsh folk music night took place at the Ganolfan, Nefyn, to bring the town’s Sportsman pub “back to life” as a community venture.

A committee formed earlier this year, Tafarn yr Heliwr Cyf, aims to raise around £160,000 to create a “much-needed social space that the whole community can use, where everyone is welcome”.

Not only would the pub be brought back to life, the committee hopes the building could also provide accommodation for visitors, a restaurant, space for music and events, and a cosy hub for community groups.

Bethan Wyn Evans, who was instrumental in forming the committee, said: “Following the community meeting in January we saw that there was strong support to reopen Tafarn yr Heliwr, better known as the Sportsman, and a committee was formed. We’ve since registered the venture as a Community Benefit Society, and we’re FCA registered, this will enable us to sell shares, fund-raise and apply for funding.

“A community questionnaire was recently handed out and filled in by people online. We received nearly 300 responses with very positive replies. People are keen to support a community ‘hub’ where people could come together socially for a panad or pint.”
