A tribute has been paid to Machynlleth butcher William Lloyd Williams MBE who has decided to hang up his white coat and cleaver.

Machynlleth Town Council paid tribute to the “well-known" businessman, whose family has served the community since 1959, as he prepares to take on a senior position with the Football Association of Wales.

Mr Lloyd Williams retired at the end of July, after his grandfather founded a butcher shop, William Lloyd Williams & Sons, in 1959.

During a town council meeting on 26 July, mayor Cllr Tony Jones paid tribute to the “well-known” businessman, who has “worked very hard to build a family-run abattoir and shop in the town”.

He also paid tribute to his involvement with the Welsh FA and told councillors he will commence a four-year term of office from 1 August as vice president for the Football Association of Wales.

“Will has played a huge part with Machynlleth Football Club and his beloved Hurricanes,” Cllr Tony Jones added.

“He has put a huge amount of voluntary effort into the town which largely goes unnoticed but is greatly appreciated.

“We must not forget that Will served as a councillor and was mayor from 1999 to 2000. In 2009 Will was awarded MBE for his services for the meat industry.

“Will is a man with a pen forever behind his ear, he has served Machynlleth well, I wish him a healthy, long and well-deserved retirement.”

Cllr Michael Williams spoke of the “absolutely huge benefit” Mr Lloyd Williams brought to the town, adding “there will ever be another William Lloyd Williams”.
