OWNERS of a Tremadog eatery are flavour of the month after winning the Welsh restaurant of the year award.
Y Sgwâr, which was opened in 2003 by David and Lorraine Lloyd-Roberts, won the prestigious accolade at the Welsh Hospitality Awards in Cardiff last week.
It was also named as the best restaurant in north Wales.
The restaurant, renowned as a hub of the community, was originally a run down and derelict property when it was purchased by the late father of Lorraine in 2001.
After several years of converting the property, the shell of Y Sgwâr restaurant was created. Lorraine and David took the plunge and opened the business on 8 August, 2003.
As well as operating a casual, contemporary restaurant where the service is “informal yet professional”, the duo have also hosted several charity nights over the years helping to raise thousands of pounds to worthy charities.
This year alone the restaurant played a key part in helping Lorraine raise over £4,000 for Marie Curie Meirion and Dwyfor.
Lorraine was exhilarated with the award.
“We were thrilled to have been announced as the winners for the north... However, we didn’t realise that there would be an overall Best Restaurant for the whole of Wales!
“It’s amazing, we still can’t believe it. The whole team are just thrilled, it was such a great moment for us all.”
