AFTER a year of planning, an important major exhibition has opened to the public at Mid Wales Arts Centre in Caersws and is attracting large audiences. The centre was approached by the Royal Welsh Watercolour Society who wanted a suitable venue for their main exhibition of the year. The fast developing gallery and sculpture park is now the home of Sculpture Cymru, the association of Sculptors in Wales and attracts a growing number of gallery visitors. As well as the 100+ sculptures to discover in the fields and gardens the gallery in the main house and the Sculpture Hall offer a unique space for major exhibitions. The exhibition was masterminded by David James, secretary of the Royal Welsh Watercolour Society and the Welsh Group with Rachel Dunlop and curated by Cathy Knapp with valuable help from the young team at MWA.The president of the society, celebrated artist Robert Macdonald opened the exhibition.Teenagers in Powys who are taking GCSE or A level Art or Technology subjects have been busy creating sculptures at the centre. They take place every Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 4pm until the end of August and are run with Mid Wales Food and Land Trust. The sessions include drawing, modelling in clay, wire sculpture, casting, plaster, textiles, photography and will result in a final exhibition and piece of permanent public sculpture. If you know a teenager who would like to be involved, call Cathy at Mid Wales Arts 01686 688369 or 07970 671819.
