A COUNCILLOR has called on Ceredigion council to “investigate” placing communal bins for household waste in Aberystwyth to avoid the familiar scenes of the contents of split black bags strewn across the town’s streets on collection day.

Cllr Ceredig Davies has asked for the council to look at a solution that has been used successfully in Brighton – where communal bins are placed around the streets to store household waste for those without space to store black bags.

The site of black bags in Aberystwyth town centre split and their contents spread across the pavements is a regular site on collection day, with many town centre properties featuring multiple occupation and a lack of bin storage or access to wheelie bins.

The situation is likely to get worse, with Ceredigion moving to three-weekly bin collections – although the council has promised to look at alternatives to alleviate any further problems being caused on the streets of Aberystwyth.

Cllr Davies has written to Cllr Dafydd Edwards, Ceredigion council’s Cabinet member for waste, to urge him to look at more options to solve the problem.

Resident Carol Williams took photos of the rubbish on North Parade on Tuesday morning, showing litter strewn across the pavement – highlighting the extent of the regular problems.

“This is probably as bad as I have ever seen it and I have been here for 15 years,” she said.

“It’s shocking, it’s really upsetting to be honest. Why not give out solid bins? This would be solved then.”
