AMID calls for a reprieve, Aberystwyth’s under-threat park-and-ride scheme will be discuseed this morning (Tuesday).

The park-and-ride should be handed a reprieve, councillors have said, with one claiming that fellow members could have been “misled about the number of passengers and cost of running the service”.

A controversial decision by Ceredigion council Cabinet to scrap the service when the current contract expires has been called in by council chairman Dai Mason, who represents Trefeurig ward, and Llanbadarn Fawr councillors Gareth Davies and Paul James.

The council’s Thriving Communities Scrutiny Committee was due to be discussing the service today (Tuesday).

It comes after strong criticism from Cllr Mason at the Cabinet meeting, as he insisted that the council could actually pay for the whole service by introducing a 60p increase in the parking charge at the long-stay car park on Boulevard St Brieuc, meaning it would cost £2 to park there all day.

He claimed that figures produced by the council to justify the removal of the bus service had not told the true story and that it could have led to some councillors being “misled”.

Cllr Mason said: “It’s possible that councillors have been misled about the running costs of the park-and-ride scheme in Aberystwyth."
