Dwyfor Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts has called on the government to remove electrical equipment from the cells of prisoners with a history of Spice abuse, as they can be used to create the spark needed to take the drug.

Spice is a synthetic drug which mimics marijuana and leaves users in a zombie-like state.

It’s both strong and cheap, making it appealing to some of society’s most vulnerable groups.

Mrs Saville Roberts’ request to the House of Commons follows the death of her constituent Luke Morris Jones of Blaenau Ffestiniog, who suffered a fatal heart attack in March 2018 whilst a prisoner at HMP Berwyn. He was the first inmate to die at the prison.

The inquest last year heard that talks were taking place about moving Luke Morris Jones from Alwen wing to Bala wing in the days before his death, where the drug was harder for him to access.

Speaking in the House of Commons Liz Saville Roberts MP said: “In March 2018, 22-year-old Luke Morris Jones of Blaenau Ffestiniog was the first man to die at HMP Berwyn following a heart attack caused by psychoactive substance abuse.

“Following his inquest last month, his family and I remain deeply concerned that electrical equipment such as kettles, in the cells of prisoners with a history of drug misuse are being used to create a spark to take the drug.”

Mrs Saville Roberts added: “I have asked the government to look at working with others to remove all electrical equipment from the cells of prisoners susceptible to drug misuse, to prevent such a tragedy happening again.”
