CALLS are being made for dog-free zones to be created in certain areas of Porthmadog during the summer months.
Over the last couple of months, Porthmadog councillors have been left concerned after incidents involving dogs attacking horses and sheep near Black Rock Sands beach.
The issue was raised during the last town council meeting, when Cllr Gwilym Jones suggested some areas around the beach should become dog-free zones.
He said: “I am a daily user of Black Rock Sands and I’ve noticed how many dogs are on the beach.
“The far end of the beach on the side of the caves is a dog-free zone but I suggest we also have a ban on the side of the beach from Lôn Gwydryn up to the Cwt Pwdr.”
However, Cllr Jason Humphreys said it was important that there were areas where dogs were allowed to run free.
There was a majority decision by the members to contact Gwynedd Council to discuss ways to introduce dog-free zones in the areas around Black Rock Sands.
Gwynedd Council’s principal maritime and country parks officer Barry Davies said: “The path between Borth y Gest and the main entrance to the beach at Black Rock Sands forms party of the All Wales Coastal Path. As is the case for the All Wales Coastal Path along its entire length, members of the public are entitled to walk their dogs between these two points. We have been invited to attend a meeting with Porthmadog Town Council in September to discuss their concerns and we look forward to exploring the various possible steps that may be possible to resolve the matter.”
