THE DWYFOR and Meirionnydd MP has criticised both the central and Welsh governments for not doing enough to help those affected by recent flooding.
Over several stormy weeks, flood waters have caused chaos across Liz Saville Roberts’ constituency with Porthmadog, Barmouth and Blaenau Ffestiniog bearing the brunt.
Now, responding to news that Wales will receive a slice of a £50 million UK flood relief package based on the Barnett Formula, the Plaid MP has called for fair distribution of funds to help local communities.
“This is a drop in the ocean and will do very little to appease those affected by repeated flooding,” Mrs Roberts stated.
“Throwing a quick buck at the problem will not address the long-term issue, that of chronic under-funding and broken promises.
“Those left picking up the pieces following the recent floods want to be reassured that this won’t happen again - that requires a long-term strategy and concerted support from all agencies.
“We need firm assurances from the Welsh Government that any financial support is directed to those communities hardest hit, with priority given to areas which have borne the brunt of the flooding, such as the A55 along the North Wales coast.”
The Plaid Cymru politician also suggested that the Welsh Government could have done more to reduce the scale of recent flooding.
“The Welsh Government must sit down and listen to local authorities calling for a long-term flood defence strategy,” she added.
“Despite repeated calls from Plaid Cymru, the Welsh Labour Government failed to carry out essential flood prevention work on the A55 which could have mitigated the effects of the recent floods.
“Their failure to release the money to fund the scheme has left homeowners and motorists high and dry.
“Plaid Cymru will press for the fair distribution of any funds so that communities across Wales affected by the recent floods are duly compensated.”
