DOLGELLAU’S new deputy mayor is calling for the town centre to be pedestrianised.
Cllr Ywain Myfyr has spoken of his desire to see the pedestrianisation of Dolgellau’s town centre, suggesting it would draw visitors to the town.
He set out his ideas at a recent town council meeting during a debate over where a potential bus interchange could be situated in the town.
He reasoned that if Dolgellau’s bus services, which tend to stop and wait in Eldon Square presently, were relocated to another site, then the town square could be made more tourist and people-friendly.
“We need to look further ahead, we need to look at what will happen in five or 10 years,” Cllr Myfyr said.
“Imagine Dolgellau without buses in the centre. It would be a tourist goldmine if we had a European-style town square.
“Very few towns if any have their bus station in the town square so why should we?
“I’ve received numerous complaints from businesses in the square where the air quality is diminished due to idling diesel engines.
“People can’t even get into shops sometimes, it’s a real problem.
“If we relocated the bus stop to Marian Mawr, it would still serve the town but would free up Eldon Square, making it cleaner and safer for everybody.”
