A RAILWAY campaign group is calling for the reopening of a line between Bangor and Porthmadog which was last used over 50 years ago.
Traws Link Cymru is seeking members to form a northern group to press for the reopening of the line which closed to passengers in 1964 and had stations at Chwilog, Llangybi, Ynys, Bryncir, Penygroes, Groeslon, Llanwnda, Dinas, Caernarfon, Dinorwig, Treborth and Menai Bridge.
Traws Link Cymru believes that reopening the line would be a cheaper investment and a more suitable alternative to the Bontnewydd bypass. Even though some development has taken place on the line, the campaign group believes it is possible for the railway to be reinstated.
A spokesperson for Traws Link Cymru said: “We very much see the reopening of the line that ran from Bangor to Porthmadog until the 1960s as part of the grand vision of reconnecting north and south Wales by train.
“Until now, we have focused our energies on reopening the Aberystwyth to Carmarthen line, but reopening both would provide a north-south link within Wales and connect all eight university towns and cities in the country by rail.
