AN Aberystwyth campaign group has been praised by politicians for its support for refugees who have settled in the town.
Speaking at Aberaid’s Solidarity with Refugees event at the Morlan Centre on Saturday, both Mark Williams MP and Elin Jones AM paid tribute to the group’s work, and called on both the Welsh and UK Governments to do more to help refugees.
Ms Jones said: “We should be very proud that Aberystwyth was the first town in Wales to offer a home for Syrian refugees, but so much more needs to be done by all governments to support people having to escape from the bombing of their towns and cities in Syria.
“Aberaid has been instrumental in enabling Aberystwyth to show support for refugees.”
Mr Williams said: “Our government should be ashamed that, despite their unquantified promises, the Immigration Act, which became law on 10 May, has seen only 30 unaccompanied children come to the UK.
“There are 80,000 unaccompanied children across Europe and some 400 alone in Calais, some of whom I met when I visited the camps.
“I salute the work of Aberaid in raising the profile of the human tragedy and our responsibilities."
