I am Britain’s leading collector of brewery trays and also collect any other pre-World War Two brewery memorabilia.
My passion though is my collection of trays. I have been collecting for over 40 years and have appeared on TV on numerous occasions, my favourite being Antiques Road Trip.
I would like to see if any of your readers could help me locate an old Aberystwyth brewery tray I have been seeking for over 30 years.
The tray in question is one from David Roberts & Sons Ltd.The company and its 117 public houses were acquired by William Hancock & Co Ltd in 1960. The item most likely has a black back with a high probability that it has a maker’s mark from Causton,B.A.T Co Ltd or Hancock Corfield & Waller Ltd. I have many lovely Welsh trays, but this one continues to elude me.
Another brewery that supplied the area was that of Thomas Salt & Co Ltd once of Burton on Trent. In addition to trays I also focus my collection on memorabilia from Salt’s brewery. My ‘Holy Grail’ is to find a tray from this brewery which closed in 1927. The tray would most likely feature their trademark, a red Maltese Cross, similar to the mirror pictured. Salt’s produced mirrors, show cards, ashtrays, match strikers, coasters, playing cards and even dominoes and pens, but I’ve never found a tray.
My passion for this subject has been captured on a website that took me three years to create. If interested please search www.brewerytrays.co.uk
If anyone can help me locate the Robert’s or Salts trays, or indeed any Salt’s item, please email [email protected] or phone my mobile 07715 369540 or landline 01572 490170.
Any call would be greatly appreciated.
