WOMEN across Dwyfor Meirionnydd will tonight stand on their doorsteps with a candle in solidarity with all women who have faced or been threatened with violence on the streets.

The vigil, which is named ‘reclaim the night’, will see women stand outside at 8pm this evening.

Cllr Nia Jeffreys, who represents Porthmadog, is one of the organisers of the vigil.

She said: “A small group of us from Porthmadog, Penrhyndeudraeth and Blaenau Ffestiniog decided, on social media, to arrange a doorstep vigil in solidarity with all women who have lost their lives, faced violence or been threatened on our streets, back lanes and rural footpaths.

“We wanted to publicly show support and solidarity with all women but in a Covid secure way.

“Soon women from Pen Llyn, Pwllheli, Criccieth across Gwynedd and Conwy were arranging doorstep vigils too and sharing our poster.

“It’s important to highlight that women suffer violence and are unsafe in our towns and villages in rural Wales as well as in cities and big towns.

“Please join us by lighting a candle and standing on the doorstep tonight at 8pm in solidarity with all women and girls.”
