A memorial to the drowned village, Capel Celyn, has been given special protection.

Cadw provided special protection for nine Welsh sites during 2019 and Capel Celyn Memorial Chapel, which is located at the north-west end of Llyn Celyn, was one of these sites.

Capel Celyn was a rural village in the Afon Tryweryn valley.

Controversially, the valley, including the village, was flooded in 1965 to create a reservoir in order to supply Liverpool with water for industry.

The village’s school, chapel, post office and houses were lost beneath the Tryweryn reservoir.

Alongside the memorial, the Harlech crash site of a Lockheed P-38 Lighting fighter aircraft was also given special protection by Cadw in November.

The American fighter plane, also known as the ‘Maid of Harlech’, crashed off the North Wales coast during the Second World War in 1942.
