CALLS are being made for double yellow lines to be placed on main roads in and out of Dolgellau after a parked car blocked the route for buses on Eldon Square over the weekend.
This was the second time in a week that a car parked near the Ship Inn prevented buses from leaving the square, causing delays for commuters.
Charlie Williams wrote to the Cambrian News, saying: “For the second time within a week Dolgellau town ground to a standstill because of a parked car outside Ship Hotel preventing buses leaving the town square.
“At 7.35pm on Saturday, 25 January, all four TrawsCymru buses departing to Bangor, Barmouth, Wrexham and Aberystwyth, and two incoming buses, along with private hire coach and an ambulance were unable to pass a parked Audi on the corner near Ship Hotel.
“An ambulance driver radioed for police to assist but, after 20 minutes of gridlock, buses eventually reversed back into square with help and assistance from members of public and passengers in order to exit the town on the Tywyn road.
“But it was too late for many passengers who subsequently missed rail connections at Barmouth up the Cambrian Coast and were left with a long wait for next train.
“There are calls for yellow lines to be installed at the location to prevent similar incidents happening again. Thankfully the ambulance was not on an emergency call at the time.”
Town councillor Delwyn Evans disagreed with the suggestion of double yellow lines.
He said: “You can’t put yellow lines throughout all of the town. What we need is for police or traffic wardens to police the town’s streets.”
A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “Whilst no specific requests have been received to consider installing double yellow lines in this area, the council’s Transport Service would be willing to consider the matter.
“In the meantime, the council’s parking enforcement team will continue to monitor the situation when they are in the area.”
