A BOW Street carpenter’s amazing cabin built to look like a dragon’s eye has beat off stiff competition to win a TV competition.
Father-of-three Carwyn Lloyd Jones, who teaches carpentry at Machynlleth’s Centre for Alternative Technology, beat seven other finalists to be crowned winner of Channel 4’s Cabins in the Wild series, which aired last Sunday.
Made in association with Epic Retreats, a partnership between Best of Wales, Cambria Tours and George + Tomos Architects, and part-funded by the Welsh Government, Cabins in the Wild challenged eight contestants to build pop-up cabin hotels to celebrate Wales’ Year of Legends 2017.
Mr Jones, who beat a rival in a head-to-head in the first episode of the series before being named overall winner in the final episode, won plaudits for his cabin, Dragon’s Eye.
Dick Strawbridge, who presented the show, said of Mr Jones’ cabin: “This was the stand-out design, making the most of views through the massive windows of the dragon’s eye. This was the result of incredible and devoted craftmanship.”
Speaking to the Cambrian News this week, Mr Jones, who lives with his wife Lyndsey and three children Jordan, 17, Benjamin, 15, and Maddison, 4, said: “It has been quite good. Channel 4 wanted to turn it into a competition because it made good television, but everyone who made up the final eight had actually won anyway.
“I did enjoy it. All the cabins have something different about them.
“My design was very ambitious. I designed it but it took a bit longer to build than I expected.
“It was quite a stressful process. There was of course late nights — the first month was 10 or 12-hour days.”
