Community Garden volunteers invited members of the public to ‘Have a Grow Day’, after Aberystwyth Town Council awarded them £875 for their work.
On 5 June, during Have a Grow Day, which is a national celebration of community growing organized by Social Farms and Gardens, volunteers from Penglais Community Garden invited members of the public to plant in their public garden, situated near the Arts Centre.
It offered tours of the garden, bug hunting for children, refreshments for volunteers and an opportunity to enjoy the sunshine.
Jane Powell said: “We are delighted to receive this money from Aberystwyth Town Council as it will enable us to invest in the garden, secure the vegetable beds and purchase tools for volunteers to use.”
Marc Welsh said: “Our recent ‘seedling swap’ event demonstrated the desire and enthusiasm people have for growing their own and sharing their gardening passion.
“Throughout the pandemic the community garden was maintained by a few dedicated volunteers but as we unlock it needs a bit of renovation and refocus on involving people in growing together.”
Marc added the grant would help with repairing the polytunnel, building raised beds, rabbit proofing, helping develop volunteer skills, and marketing the excess produce.
