Llyn and Eifionydd’s annual St David’s Day celebrations start in earnest a week on Saturday with events lined up all week in Pwllheli and beyond.
Organised by Cymdeithas Dewi Sant Pwllheli and partners, the events aim to promote the Welsh language and culture.
Cymdeithas Parêd Dewi Sant Pwllheli has presented 30 packs to schools with information about what’s on offer this year.
Rhys Llewelyn, chair said: “We’ve provided an information pack for each school with a Power Point presentation, a video from a previous parade, and Dewi Pws and Bryn Fôn’s Cân y Parêd (The Parade’s Song) for schools to learn ready for Saturday, 2 March.”
Carys Hughes, headteacher of Ysgol Bro Plenydd, Y Ffôr added: “I believe the parade is an important event in Llyn and Eifionydd.
“Children gain a lot from such an event. It is vital to transfer the sense of Welshness and heritage to them as the future is in their hands.
“As a school we are proud to participate in the events organised to celebrate Welshness in the community.”
The celebrations will kick off on Saturday with Wythnos Tapas Llyn from 23 February, with totally unique local Welsh tapas created by local people using local ingredients – and each dish having a Welsh name.
They will be served at Ty Newydd, Aberdaron; Plas Glyn y Weddw, Llanbedrog; Caffi Meinir, Nant Gwrtheyrn; Caffi Grug, Botwnnog; Glasu, Gwalia, Taro Deg, Felin Fwyd and Whitehall in Pwllheli.
The theme for this year’s fifth parade will be celebrating that the Welsh Dragon has been the official flag of Wales for 60 years.
Many dragons will be seen on Tapas Llyn meals too. The cafés will have Welsh flag cocktail sticks to decorate the plates and celebrate the Dragon’s birthday.
The parade will be held on Saturday, 2 March, in Pwllheli. Casia Wiliam (Wales’ Children’s Poet) and Osian Rhys Jones (the winning bard at the 2017 Ynys Môn National Eisteddfod) and Gruffudd Eifion Owen (winning bard at the 2018 Cardiff Eisteddfod) will carry the large flags at the front of the parade.
