A community centre in Meirionnydd has better disabled access thanks, in part, to the Cambrian News.
An article from Cymunedol Eryi Fund Team about grants available in the Snowdonia area appeared in the Cambrian News last October, attracting the attention of Major(Ret) Mair Jones from Abergynolwyn. In her nineties, Ms Jones is one of the oldest residents in Abergynolwyn, but still plays an active role in the village attending church and other meetings.
Ms Jones had been aware that the main doors on Y Ganolfan Abergynolwyn used to have a disabled access button. However, it had been broken for some time and, due to limited funds, had not been repaired, making the doors difficult to open for people with limited mobility.
Ms Jones passed the article onto Y Ganolfan committee, who successfully applied and received a grant of £5,280 from the Cymunedol Eryi Fund Team. As a result of that, the doors have now been repaired and are fully operational.
A spokesperson for the centre said it was grateful to Ms Jones for bringing the article to their attention added: “Many thanks to the Cambrian News for featuring the article and special thanks to the generosity of Cymunedol Eryi Fund Team who gave us the grant.”
As well as having a café and a centre for the community, Y Ganolfan also has a large display of historical photographs of Abergynolwyn, the surrounding area, and the slate quarry, and is a popular destination for visitors to the area.
