CEREDIGION’S roads were the subject of 4,615 roadworks last year, an increase of 31 per cent on the previous year, a freedom of information request by the Cambrian News has revealed.
In 2013, there were a total of 3,513 roadworks across Ceredigion’s roads, compared to 4,615 in 2014, and drivers on one of the county’s busiest and most important arterial routes, the A487 coastal road, had to endure 555 road works last year, an increase of 43 per cent on 2013.
As of July this year, Ceredigion County Council has already allowed or carried out 2,262 roadworks across the county, with 304 of these being carried out on the A487.
Ceredigion AM Elin Jones said the figures were encouraging because they showed the council was continuing to invest in highways despite tight budgetary constraints.
She said: “In this time of cuts in public funding, it’s a challenge not to fall too far behind on road repairs and other infrastructure work."
A council spokesperson said: “Ceredigion County Council has not undertaken any evaluation of the data provided in relation to the number of road works undertaken in Ceredigion, and as such is not able to offer any view on that data.”
